In professional wrestling, retirement matches rarely last forever. Sometimes a send off is perfect, like those of Ric Flair & Shawn Micheals, who went out at Wrestlemania against perfect opponents, only to come back for more to the dismay of fans. Other times it’s Terry Funk retiring more times than most people start jobs. However, in a few rare cases, when it’s over it really is over. Stone Cold Steve Austin is one case, and Kurt Angle is proving to be another.
The Retirement Of Kurt Angle Is Fresh In The Minds Of Fans
The retirement of Kurt Angle is still rather fresh. He wrestled his final match at Wrestlemania 35, capping off a retirement tour against Baron Corbin of all people. Corbin was the right choice in the sense that he is an incredibly safe worker, but was an underwhelming final match for a legend like Angle.
Even still, Angle was fine with this. He had his career, made it into the WWE Hall of Fame, and is 13 time world champion among countless other accomplishments. Add in an olympic gold medal that he won with a broken neck, and there is no doubt that Angle is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
AEW Offered A Seven Match Deal
This didn’t stop AEW & Impact Wrestling from reaching out to Angle with offers for more matches when he was let go from WWE. While speaking with Fightful, Angle would go into detail why he turned down these extra matches.
“I had AEW, TNA, they’ve offered. But, I can’t do it. I wish I could. My body’s too banged up. I’m fifty-two years old. Just trying to live my life now and trying to live it in less pain. I’m in a lot of pain right now, I’m suffering from the career I’ve had, but I don’t regret it. AEW I think was a seven match deal. TNA I think they were just gonna do one match. But I just felt my final match is in WWE. I knew that I lost the step. I wasn’t the same as I was in my prime. I didn’t like the person I was, the performer I was. So, if I can’t perform at the level that I was in my prime, I’m not gonna do it any more. That’s why I turned down the offers from AEW and TNA.”
Angle knew his body couldn’t go at the level he wanted anymore, and that was the sign to call it quits. There was simply nothing left to prove in the ring. Sometimes you need to know when to hold’em, know when to fold ’em, and know when to walk away. Angle made the right choice, but it would be interesting to have seen what AEW & Impact had planned.
