AEW has taken the professional wrestling world by storm the last two years, and now it’s been reported that Tony Kahn has taken over full control of AEW creative.
In many way, it’s not that surprising as he’s been reportedly inching his way more and more into it from being on the outside, then having the final say, and now taking full control.
Given how many believe he’s a student of wrestling history, it seems only natural. More than that, he surrounded himself with quality talent from the beginning to help him learn as his EVPs ran the show.
The old system reportedly had Cody running the singles division, the Young Bucks the tag division, and Brandi Rhodes the women’s and Kenny Omega a liaison or ambassador to New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Learning from history
While AEW has the feel and often sounds like WCW, it looks like he’s learned from some mistakes made there, with the top one being not giving talent creative control.
There’s a long documented history about how stars like Hulk Hogan and others having creative control hampered things as well as making them the perfect scapegoats, and Kahn’s avoiding that.
As reported by Sportskeeda.com, Kahn spoke at the AEW All Out 2021 Media Scrum.
“Not one person, including Mr. Punk and everyone on the roster, has creative control. It’s not like WCW and that is one of the issues with WCW. When you have a person who has creative control in their contract, it can hold up the show. I don’t know how you get through TV doing that. I can’t imagine if I had to deal with that. What I do have is a lot of people I want to sit down and talk to and hear what they want to say.”
Making changes
With the reports of Kahn taking more control over AEW creative came questions as to what happened to the EVPs that have been there since the beginning to help him, and it appears they have those titles in name only, as reported by Cassidy Haynes at Bodyslam.net.
He went even further to share that it appears that Cody was the only one reported to be at the office meetings regularly, but also while the others are still great friends he the outsider looking into the EVP circle.
While there’s been change in the office with AEW, Tony Kahn has an open door type of policy for ideas and pitches as he welcomes any AEW talent to come to him, but he does have the final say.
It should be interesting to see how this works out in the long term, but if recent history is anything to go by the future looks bright.
