Lately with Dark Side Of The Ring covering the infamous “Plane Ride From Hell” there has been a big push to detail some other incidents that happened in WWE around the 90’s and 2000’s. This story comes from Reee Dupree, who was signed to WWE at just 19 years old where he’d become the youngest World Tag Team Champion in company history (at the time). However, while he was doing well on TV, the french wrestler was not respected backstage – including by The Undertaker.
Rene Dupree Had His Belongings Destroyed Because He Didn’t Go Drinking
In an interview on the “That 90’s Wrestling Podcast”, Dupree would go into detail about some incidents that showed the mentality of the WWE locker room perfectly.
“They took my $500 shoes and $1000 suit and ruined it in the shower because I didn’t go out drinking at a bar the night before because nobody invited me. That’s just materialistic sh*t you can replace that, that doesn’t bother me. What really bothered me is when in Italy the next night they took my French flag – my heritage – they shoved it in a toilet and p*ssed and sh*t all over it. I don’t know what bullsh*t world you live in but in my world that’s called racial discrimination. That was really hurtful.”
Dupree would reach out to some respected names backstage to find out why this had happened, and got his answer.
“What I did do was I went to Arn Anderson who was the agent and I asked him – Arn’s advice to me was ‘Don’t sell it.’ I was like ok. The next person I went to was The Undertaker and I said ‘What do you do when someone does this to you?’ And he goes ‘Well you find out who does it.’ He ordered them to do that because I didn’t go out drinking with him and the guys at a bar.”
The Locker Room Is Now Less Hostile
While nothing illegal was done here, this still shows that maybe The Undertaker isn’t the great locker room leader that WWE sometimes paints him as. Hazing was common back in these days, with other incidents including people shooting on Tough Enough winner Daniel Pudder during a Royal Rumble, The Miz being forced to change outside the locker room, and many many more.
The locker room is a safer place now, somewhere more friendly where you’re less likely to get such treatment. While some older wrestlers claim this makes the current generation soft, I’d rather play video games with current WWE Champion Big E than deal with anything like that anyday.
