When it comes to tag teams in ROH today, two teams stand out as veterans. The Briscoes are as iconic as it gets for ROH, while The OGK has Grand Slam Champion, Matt Taven. Tonight, these two teams will battle to see who could be next in line for a shot at the ROH World Tag Team Championships. Taven is coming off a cage match loss to Vincent, and is looking to rebuild his career from the ashes of that crushing defeat.
The Briscoes Waste No Time
It’s been six years since the last encounter of these teams, and Jay ran right in and looked for the J-Driller. Taven would go for the Climax, and their partners both made deft saves. We’d get some order with Taven & Mark, before Mark was taken down with a drop toehold and dodged an elbow drop. Jay & Bennett would tag in, and Bennett took a rolling elbow to the jaw.
Mark was back in and nailed a big lariat, and Bennett would find himself isolated early in this fight. Bennett would fight off an exploder suplex, and would fight Mark into the OGK corner. Taven was back in, and hit a missile dropkick to the jaw. Jay would make a blind tag and help Mark regain control. Taven would go for a DDT, before taking some jabs and a DDT from Jay.
The OGK would set up the Doomsday Device on the outside, but The Briscoes made the save. Taven would go after Mark who was perched up top before hitting a moonsault onto both Jay & Bennett, and stuck the landing! Not to be outdone, Mark Briscoe hit a flying elbow strike to the outside, dropping everyone.
Matt Taven Shows How Smooth He Can Be
Back in the ring, The Briscoes would set up a big single leg dropkick for a two count. Bennett would nail a Death Valley Driver, before Taven in the Just The Tip knee strike. Jay would be locked in the armbar, but Mark made the save only to take a spear. Bennett & Jay were legal, until Mark got a tag and showed his redneck kung fu.
Mark would take out Taven with a dropkick, send Bennett to the floor and hit a Blockbuster off the arpon. Taven was sent into the ring, and Jay nailed a huge lariat before Mark hit Froggy-Bow for a two count, Bennett making the save. Jay threw a chair into the ring, and looked for Redneck Boogie on the chair! Bennett made the save with a spear, before being sent outside and hit with the dive. Jay would look for J-Driller, but a clean Small Package from Taven got the win.
You can tell these are two top level tag teams, and with more time or higher stakes, this would have been a classic. They showed great chemistry, kept the action going all the way through. Match Rating: 3.25/5 ()
This win over The Briscoes who were ranked #3 had to push The OGK back into the rankings. Could they reclaim tag team gold this year? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
