The rumors about the WWE being sold won’t die down, and in fact they only seem to be increasing in frequency as there have been numerous reports online that higher ups in the WWE said they believe Disney will purchase the company by year’s end.
This is no surprise given Mike Chioda recently said he thinks Disney will buy them, and according to @wrestlingrepublic it looks like a possibility in their following quote.
“Considering WWE already have a streaming deal with Peacock, and a TV deal with USA, NBC buying the company would certainly not be surprising news. However Wrestling Republic understands that is not currently the plan. We’ve been told by a source high up on the cooperate side of WWE, that the expectation among higher ups is that Disney will make a play for Vince McMahon’s promotion, possibly even before the end of the year. We were specifically told that the Peacock streaming deal was not a concern to Disney, as they looked at WWE in the bigger picture, with more of a long term mentality.” – Ben Allison via Allison Analysis
The good
We’re written about this possibility previously and why we think it looks like the WWE is getting ready to be sold, but this is something that could go either way.
On the plus side, another company owning them could open things up more as far as revenue for the talent and hopefully better retirement options so the wrestlers aren’t left with little to now help like Kamala and many others.
It could continue the stability many on the roster have enjoyed over the years.
There are potentially other positives as well, including Disney movies and other media, and since they have a longer reach than the WWE currently this will tie into the higher revenue stream.
But, and there’s always a but, there are problems that could prove costly.
The bad
One of these is the probability that Disney or NBC won’t know or understand the product and how to manage and market it.
Sure, most likely they’ll retain Triple H and others to run it for them like Dana White remained onboard UFC, but this isn’t a cure all.
Eric Bischoff had a similar situation in WCW where Turner Media didn’t know what to make or do with professional wrestling, and they looked at it like a red headed step child.
While he expect Disney of NBC to do their homework, chances are this could be the end result with them telling Triple H or whoever’s in charge what they can and can’t do.
The hope
The hope for fans would be that Triple H would finally take control and manage the company like he did NXT for years when it was the best of the three brands.
It’s a tall order, but it does give us hope that history won’t repeat for the WWE. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
