The TBS Tournament is here to claim a new champion in AEW. While that won’t happen until January, things kick off tonight with Ruby Soho taking on Penelope Ford. Soho feels like a natural pick for the first TBS Champion, but recently Ford has been a fan of using an ol’ tactic known by some as “The Power of The Punch”. Soho better keep her eyes peeled, or one punch could send her out of the bracket.
Penelope Ford Gets Some Aid
The crowd was excited to see Ruby Soho in action tonight, getting a huge pop like usual. Ford however was less than impressed and would jump Soho in the ring before the bell. Starting from the bottom in this match, he’d hit some forearms before being able to grab an arm lock. Ford was able to regain control, putting Soho in the corner for some stomps before a front handspring into a spear.
Soho dodged the running big boot and nailed a midsection kick before a running thrust kick. Going to the apron, Ford would find some aid from her pal The Bunny, who distracted Soho for long enough for Ford to kick her in the face. Back in the ring, this would only get a two count before a knee to the face, before a dropkick sent Soho to the outside.
Ruby Soho Won’t Get Punched Out Tonight
Ford would distract the referee as The Bunny got some cheap shots in, and Ford almost got the count out victory. Back in the ring, Soho countered a handspring back elbow into a reverse Deadly Nightshade, before a backdrop suplex sent Ford onto her head. A knee to the face and a thrust kick would be followed by an enziguri before Soho hit a sliding lariat for a two count.
Ford would nail a cutter for a two count, catching Soho off her game for just a second. A half boston crab was countered into a roll up, where Soho got a two count. The STO took Ford down, but the Senton wasn’t hit. A back heel kick and a gutbuster got a two count, and the referee saw The Bunny throw in brass knuckles, and Soho got a roll up win.
A decent match to kick this tournament off. Ford gets better as she gets more and more chances, while Soho is as rock solid as a worker gets. Things started off rough, but picked up well for a decent finish. Match Rating: 2.5/5 (** 1/2)
This pushes Soho into a second round match against Kris Statlander, one of the top ranked names who got a first round bye. Can she keep winning? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
