On the first show back to having crowds in WWE, there was a surprise for fans in the arena before the show. Davey Boy Smith Jr. would team up with Austin Theory for a dark match, bringing him back in WWE for the first time since 2011. There has been a lot of rumors on his WWE status, with stories about him originally being set for NXT UK and more. However, he’s been yet to show up in WWE since – and we now have the reason why.
Davey Boy Smith Jr. Contracted COVID-19
Like many things in wrestling over the past two years, the reason is COVID-19. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason we have not seen him since that one dark match and the following online exclusive interview is that he contracted COVID-19. He has since made a full recovery, and was actually backstage at the draft show in Baltimore.
This doesn’t clear up the mystery of why he has not yet been drafted – but that could be figured out in the coming weeks. It seems likely that we should see him soon, perhaps after Crown Jewel when storylines settle down and the rosters fall into place. He’s a foundational type wrestler, who can boost the in-ring quality of any show he gets featured on – so any of the four brands of WWE could use him.
Summerslam Returning To The UK Could See Him Shine As A Star – If Only For One Night
There has been talks of doing Summerslam in the UK in 2022, to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of their last time there. On that original show, the main event was an instant classic between Bret Hart and The British Bulldog, which saw Bulldog win the Intercontinental Championship.
If nothing else, WWE will likely want to push him hard for that show. He could be in the mix for a title shot there, or a classic hard hitting bout with former NXT UK Champion WALTER – who he was rumored to feud with in NXT UK around when he was first signed.
