Ahead of this Friday’s episode of Smackdown Live, there was a return a decade in the making. Former WWE Tag Team Champion and son of the legendary British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith Jr. returned to the WWE ring in a dark match alongside Austin Theory, where they defeated Odyssey Jones & Xyon Quinn (Daniel Vidot). Afterwards, there was a lot of speculation on if WWE would sign Smith Jr. to a new deal, but now we can confirm he’s been actually signed for months.
Davey Boy Smith Jr. Has Been Signed For Months
As first reported by PWInsider, Smith Jr. was potentially signed to WWE as early as March 2021, but the company was simply waiting for a good time to reveal him. With crowds back, it was as good a time as they were going to find. It is odd they did it in a dark match, but we can expect a bigger return on TV in the coming weeks.
At only 35 years old, Smith Jr. still has a lot of years left in the ring, especially with his lower risk powerhouse and technical style. While during his first run in the company where he mainly was part of a tag team with Tyson Kidd he was far from the best worker in the company, he has truly improved during his time away. He’s proven to be better in both singles and tag team action, and could mesh well with a lot of the current WWE roster.
Might Not Be Part Of The Smackdown Roster
While he made his return on a dark match for the Smackdown brand, it’s unclear where WWE will be putting him on their roster. He fought alongside Austin Theory, who currently is on the NXT brand as part of The Way. The Way could be done following Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell losing their NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships and Johnny Gargano failing to win the NXT Championship from Karrion Kross. If that faction is going to stick around, Theory is a crucial piece of the puzzle and is unlikely to get called up.
Smith Jr. could fit well into NXT, with many fans excited at the idea of him wrestling someone like Timothy Thatcher in the Fight Pit. A strong fit for him might be in the Diamond Mine faction, as having Malcolm Bivens speak for him would really improve his overall worth.
He’s got name value due to his hall of fame family legacy, being connected to the Hart’s and The British Bulldog, so WWE might be more likely to keep him on the main roster, where matches with names like Cesaro could be show stealers. WWE had originally wanted him for their NXT UK brand however, so we could even see him make his way over there to add a major draw to the program, which often gets thrown to the wayside by fans and WWE alike.
Regardless of where Smith Jr. lands, we are going to see some good grappling from him. What brand do you want to see him join? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
