The Rust shooting accident has seen several actors, directors, producers, and film crew members come out to speak on a need for stronger safety on sets. George Clooney added his insight on the shooting and safety recently on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.
George Clooney Discusses Alec Baldwin and Safety Procedures on Set
In listening to the show, Clooney was in the know about the issues Rust was working with which resulted in Halyna Hutchins’ death and Joel Souza being injured. The discussion occurred after talking about Squid Game and how it could be hard to watch with all of the headshots after what happened on the set of Rust.
He pointed out assistant director David Halls as the bad guy in this situation and that he should’ve never handled the guns. It was also interesting that he noted details of the death of Brandon Lee almost 30-years ago at the age of 28.
This is what led to a safety procedure he does on set when there are prop guns around:
“Every single time I’m handed a gun on set, I look at it, I open it, I show it to the person I’m pointing it to, we show it to the crew, every single take, you hand it back to the armorer when you’re done, and you do it again. Part of it is because of what happened to Brandon. Everyone does it. Everyone knows.”
“First of all, I’ve never the term ‘cold gun’.”
George Clooney said that checking guns and making sure it’s safe to handle is something that really became commonplace following Lee’s death. Something else of note is that Clooney pointed out the film’s budget as to why corners were cut. He also questions why an investment wasn’t put towards a more experienced armorer:
“And why for the life of me this low-budget film, with producers who haven’t produced anything, wouldn’t have hired, for the armorer, someone with experience. Maybe they weren’t even using that gun to do target practice, but they had live ammo with dummies in her pack. That is insane, it’s insane and it’s infuriating.”
The 60-year-old star also prodded the term “cold gun” which he says he had never heard of it before this incident. It’s apparently more common to announce that there is a hot gun—a gun with any kind of ammo in it—on the set.
It was also noted that the person who hands-off or presents prop guns on set that he’s been on has always been the person over props or an armorer. He made sure to note that he didn’t believe this was a malicious or intentional act but definitely negligent.
Currently, there’s an ongoing investigation surrounding the gun while Alec Baldwin faces a lawsuit Rust’s head of lighting, Serge Svetnoy.
