Following a stampede that resulted in eight deaths at the Travis Scott-headlined Astroworld Festival on Friday, the Houston artist will cover the funeral costs for the victims, according to a statement.
Travis Scott to Provide Refunds and Mental Health Services via BetterHelp
In addition to this, Scott will also work with BetterHelp to provide free mental health services to those traumatized by the events.
He is also working with Houston’s emergency services to “respectfully and appropriately connect with the individuals and families of those involved. These are the first of many steps Travis plans on taking as a part of his personal vow to assist those affected throughout their grieving and recovery process.”
Live Nation—promoter of the festival—told CNN that it is looking at ways concert goers, staff, and the families left behind following the tragedy in the form of hospital costs and counseling.
Refunds are expected as well for concertgoers who attended Friday’s shows and those who had tickets for the canceled Saturday events.
The Astroworld Festival Tragedy
On Friday, Travis Scott was set to perform around 9 PM where there were 50,000 fans in attendance. Prior to the show, Houston police chief Troy Finner is said to have warned the artist about the crowd’s energy. During the set, some attendees were trampled with the initial reports of injuries coming in 30 minutes later.
Scott continued to perform but stopped after 10 PM by which time Drake joined him on stage. Prior to that, an ambulance was spotted in the crowd to tend to the injured and deceased. He called for the fans to make way for the ambulance and also called for medical attention for a fan who had collapsed near the stage.
On the tragedy, his partner Kylie Jenner—also in attendance—said “I want to make it clear we weren’t aware of any fatalities until the news came out after the show and in no world would have continued filming or performing.”
According to The Daily Mail, Kristian Paredes of Austin, TX has come forward with a lawsuit against Travis Scott, Drake, and Live Nation for negligence. Concertgoer Manuel Souza has also filed a suit.
