After WWE decided to purge their roster once again, they need to once again fill the open spots. This means two top stars in NXT are now being eyed as potential call ups. Both Johnny Gargano & Kyle O’Reilly are being called forward to Smackdown Live tonight, where they are both set to work dark matches. Could this be bad news for these two fan favorites?
Johnny Gargano Has Wrestled On Smackdown & RAW, Previously Dodged Call Up
Gargano is an interesting name to be in the potential mix for a call up. He has long been considered to be a pillar of NXT, alongside Tommaso Ciampa. There was even a tease of a fifth match between them, after One Final Beat in 2020 closed their saga on a letdown of a match. Gargano has wrestled alongside Ciampa on RAW & Smackdown previously, and then reportedly dodged a call up with the help of Triple H.
To dodge a call up means to be offered one, and considering some of the highest quality matches in WWE history came from Gargano – it’s hard to ignore his talent. Even in short matches he shines, and he’s proven in the past year alongside The Way & Dexter Lumis to be able to make even ridiculous characters shine. We could see him soon finish up in NXT, which seemed like something that would never come.
Kyle O’Reilly Could Be Gone Soon Regardless
When it comes to Kyle O’Reilly, his contract has been announced to be due up in January of 2022. This could be the test for WWE to see if they see potential with him on the main roster, and if they should seek to renew his deal. Should O’Reilly leave WWE, he will almost certainly make his way to All Elite Wrestling, where both Bobby Fish & Adam Cole landed.
If WWE sees potential in O’Reilly, he could very well fill the same niche that Daniel Bryan filled. He’s got the same in-ring style, and while he’s not as beloved as Bryan was – his odd charisma is endearing, especially as a ridiculous heel. Sleazy Kyle is as fun as wrestlers get, which we saw when he ran with The Undisputed Era.
Right now, he’s in a tag team with Von Wagner, and WWE could bring both up. Wagner has already been viewed as a potential main event talent in the company, and simply is developing his skills and character.
