In two weeks, we have perhaps the biggest episode of AEW Dynamite that will come in 2021. Winter Is Coming once again, and much like last year – the main event is for the AEW World Championship. Last time around, Jon Moxley was unable to stop Kenny Omega from taking the AEW World Heavyweight Championship from him – and this year it’s Hangman Page defending against Bryan Danielson.
This is the first defense of the title since Page won it from Omega back at Full Gear, and could be the first match Page has had since then. He’s red hot as a champion, but could it be the right move to have Danielson take the gold?
Better On The Chase?
There is little doubt that the build to Hangman Page claiming the AEW World Heavyweight Championship was amazing. It started from day one of the company, and took many twists and turns to great a perfect moment at the end of Full Gear. However, looking at the landscape of AEW, there are not many great heel options for a champion like Page to face.
Danielson had to turn heel upon winning the Eliminator tournament to give him a first opponent. Other top heels include the highly protected MJF, Adam Cole, Andrade El Idolo, and Malakai Black. These are all names you do not want taking losses. Heels don’t lose as nicely as faces in wrestling, which is what made the dominant Kenny Omega perhaps the best AEW World Heavyweight Champion.
From Dusty Rhodes to Daniel Bryan in WWE, very popular baby faces have often been better in the chase of a championship. They’ll win, lose the belt, and repeat the chase to try and capture the belt. Add in just how dialed in Danielson has been since coming to AEW, and it’s a very real fear that Hangman has a zero defense reign as champion.
Hangman’s Loss Could Be Meant For MJF – Not Bryan Danielson
It seems like the first four champions of AEW were very carefully planned to be Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega & Hangman Page. However, many fans feel the next in line is MJF – who has recently expressed interest in the belt once again. Right now, he’s busy with CM Punk in a feud that is quickly bending the line between fiction and reality.
However after that, he’s made it clear that he can defeat Hangman Page, having done it before. MJF has only lost one or two matches during his time in AEW, making him one of the most protected names in the company. He’s also an AEW original, unlike Bryan Danielson who is still best known for his time in WWE. This makes him a better moment for AEW fans, as it would be one of their wrestlers winning the top belt from another AEW original.
This is not to say that Danielson isn’t fitting perfectly into AEW. He’s been on one of the best runs of his entire career – but having a third ex-WWE Champion could only help enforce the “AEW takes all their stars from WWE” stereotype.
