Cody Garbrandt declared that UFC 269 is just the beginning of a “flyweight takeover” for the former bantamweight champ. At the UFC 269 media day, he explained how despite losing four out of his last five fights, moving down a weight division heralds a new beginning for “No Love” Garbrandt.
“It’s been a crazy, wild rollercoaster of ups and downs, but I never lost my faith in myself and the confidence in myself that I would be back to being here, coming to fight week.
Cody Garbrandt Declares “Flyweight Takeover”
I hate using this word ‘motivated’ so I’ll use ‘inspired’. I’m inspired for what’s about to take place Saturday night and that’s the flyweight takeover.”
Garbrandt’s intention, with his move to the 125-pound division, is to claim the second UFC belt of his career. “I’ve been inspired this whole entire camp to do something that a few people have done.
Yes, I’ve been a world champion, a former world champion in a previous weight division, that’s a small percent of human beings being able to have that title to their name.
But even a smaller percentage have gone to a different division and been a world champion as well, so I’m inspired by myself, but also a lot of people around me with what’s about to take place Saturday and that’s just the start of it.”
Garbrandt initially lost his bantamweight title to TJ Dillashaw back in 2017. A rematch ended the same way, as did a follow-up bout against Pedro Munhoz. Although Cody Garbrandt was, during Deiveson Figuieredo’s title reign, due to fight for the flyweight belt, he lost the opportunity thanks to a serious bout of COVID-19.
Brandon Moreno ended up taking Figueiredo’s belt, and with a rematch set for next month, Garbrandt is looking forward to facing the winner.
“I’m excited for whoever wins that fight,” Garbrandt said. “I feel confident whoever it is for my time to get my title shot at flyweight, that it’s destiny for me. Whoever is at the throne, a new king will be there.”
Cody Garbrandt sorely needs to return to winning ways if he sees himself as a title contender. He has averaged only one fight per year since losing his belt, and including that fateful night has lost four out of five fights.
His scheduled bout against Kai Kara-France represents the first time Cody has fought twice in one year since his rise through the bantamweight division way back in 2016.
