Khamzat Chimaev’s undefeated UFC record might go back even further than anybody imagined. The Chechen fighter, who boasts four finishes in four fights in the UFC, told Hustle MMA that, back when he was a kid, he was a ferocious street fighter. It was in his native Chechnya that the 5th-grade Khamzat destroyed an 11th-grader in a street fight.
“Everyday, we had fights on the streets of Chechnya. We created history for ourselves on the streets. I’ve never lost a fight. Thank God, not yet. I definitely didn’t with my character.
Khamzat Claims He’s Undefeated Since 5th Grade… When He Beat Up an 11th Grader
I fought with the boys. I still know this guy. We are friends now. He is in the 11th grade. I’m in the 5th grade. He was not that big but bigger than me anyway. I’m near the school, I don’t remember, there was a brawl. I say let’s go and we went.
He started throwing me from right to left for about 10 minutes. Then he got tired and I started hitting him.”
Khamzat Chimaev’s arrival in the UFC has made the Chechen fighter a star in the eyes of many MMA fans. His penchant for spectacular finishes, Octagon acrobatics, and impressive athleticism – like carrying Li Jingliang across the cage like a child to finish him in front of the UFC brass – will no doubt make him a star. Before his UFC debut in 2020, Khamzat finished all six of the opponents he faced in his professional MMA career.
Chimaev could be only a few fights away from taking on the reigning welterweight king, Kamaru Usman. Usman is the #1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, a perfect opponent for the undefeated Khamzat.
He’ll need to work his way through the ranked fighters standing between him and the belt, however. Contender Gilbert Burns, who recently returned to the win column after losing a title challenge to Usman, might be the man for the job.
Khamzat, predictably, doubts that Burns has what it takes to hand him the first loss of his career. “He’s small, not big. I will out-box him. No way he could go low on me. A jiu jitsu fighter, there is no way.
I don’t think he will get on me on the mat? When was the last time he managed that?” Of course, the experienced Gilbert Burns is hardly an 11th-grader. Do you want to see Burns vs Khamzat? Let us know in the comments.
