There’s no denying that Vince McMahon is wiping away the old NXT and most that helped make it the best of their three brands, and Bron Breakker is the hammer being used to change out the old guard.
He stirred up some controversy backstage when he came out for his NXT Championship win over Tommaso Ciampa at NXT New Year’s Evil and destroyed the Styrofoam “X” with a kick.
It was a scripted moment that reportedly had a few of the old guard backstage upset, and the following day the WWE released more producers and staff, basically wiping the NXT slate clean aside from Triple H and Shawn Michaels.

Rebranding
In September, Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard took over NXT from Triple H and rebranded it NXT 2.0. The change drove away a good number of fans as it signaled being more like Raw and Smackdown, and it’s proven to be just that.
The purpose of NXT was to create the next WrestleMania main eventers, not become a brand unto itself and challenge Raw and Smackdown.
But challenge them it did as in many fans and critics’ eyes it was the superior brand, but it lost the Wednesday Night Wars after being placed across from NXT’s flagship show AEW Dynamite.
So, it appears Vince rebranded it into his image and the house cleaning has continued as the old guard in production has now been released.
It’s what they wanted
Nick Kahn talked about the rebranding during WWE’s November Q3 2021 earnings call. Special thanks to wrestlinginc.com for the transcript.
“We think it’s all starting the way that we wanted it to start. So we wanted a younger, fresher, in-ring approach. We think we have it. You’ve already seen some talent from the new NXT elevated to the main roster. There’s going to be more of that.”
The WWE may be pleased with the change, but the fans aren’t as the ratings continue to suffer as NXT 2.0 is being tuned out.
That’s a shame considering they have some serious potential talent there, as demonstrated by Breakker in his win over Ciampa.
What do you think about the complete change over? Is it for the better or worse for NXT?
