Comedian Ricky Gervais has opened up on whether he would be open to the possibility of becoming a permanent host at the Oscars at the Academy Awards.

The Oscars has often refrained from having a permanent Academy Awards host throughout the years with several people taking hosting duties. The last time that the ceremony had a permanent host was in 2017 and 2018 when Jimmy Kimmel had been tasked with the duties.
But given that Ricky had one of the most talked about hosting gigs when he presided over the 2020 Golden Global awards, when he called out Hollywood’s problem with pedophilia and Jeffrey Epstein, the chances of him taking the gig are very slim.
In an interview with Today, Ricky downplayed the chances of him taking the job. He said: “They’d never let me do what I wanted. I mean that’s why the Globes got me.
“They said I could write my own jokes and say what I wanted, no rehearsals. I’d get canceled halfway through.” Nevertheless, his comments hinted that he would be open to the job provided that he was given free reign over what he could say.
Naturally, the chances of that happening are almost non-existent, especially since his Golden Globe performance divided the crowd.
It was clear that a whole host of celebrities were uncomfortable with the nature of his jokes, especially since he had suggested that certain members of the audience at that time may have been implicated in the Epstein scandal but not have been caught.
And yet, Ricky understands that his comments have left the door open for a potential return regardless of how slim the chance may be.
He added: “I’m already regretting saying that just in case now. Under those circumstances, yeah [there’s a chance]. It won’t happen!”
It is no secret Ricky Gervais is a divisive comedian. But the very nature of the profession is that comedians should be allowed to say what they want irrespective of whether people get offended.
However, the rise of cancel culture suggests that Ricky is unlikely to be given the hosting job. That has not stopped fans from dreaming about it though.
