Shane O’Connor, the 17-year-old son of Sinéad O’Connor was found dead two days after being reported missing. The teenager’s death was confirmed by O’Connor on Twitter in a post that read:
“My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace:”
Sinéad O’Connor Loses Son After He Goes Missing From Suicide Watch
Her post comes after he went missing on January 5. Shane had made suicide attempts in the week prior and was at the Lynn Ward of Tallaght Hospital in Dublin on suicide watch. At some point, he went missing before Tusla—the child and family welfare agency in Ireland—notified the singer’s lawyer of her son’s death.

Her timeline for January 6 was to reach out to her son wherever he may have been. It then became about Tusla’s failure to watch over her son in his mental state. After identifying Shane’s body, she posted the heartbreaking confirmation then gave updates on the aftermath with Tusla including:
“Now tusla want to discuss with me “a media release” no doubt wishing to have me join in their efforts to make this death of my child seem like it wasn’t at the hands of the Irish State.”
Like any parent who loses a child in a system meant to protect them, O’Connor’s anger is understandable. It’s also expected that a child protective service would attempt to circle the wagons and do damage control due to the high-profile nature of the teen’s death.
As condolences rolled in for the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer, Sinéad O’Connor said that she was taking time away to grieve but left this message about the failure to protect and watch over her child:
