On this day in wrestling history, Hulk Hogan led the charge into the history of the Royal Rumble by becoming the second competitor to win a second Royal Rumble.
The WWE has added so much to professional wrestling over the years, a lot of their own history is often forgotten or brushed aside in the rush to promote new stars.
One of those are the early Royal Rumbles before the winner would get a shot at a WWE title. At the time, it was the culmination of a great pay-per-view and would help build storylines and create new feuds.
Since it first started, the Royal Rumble has become a staple in the WWE and is one of their big four pay-per-views, along with WrestleMania, Survivor Series, and SummerSlam.
It’s the beginning of the Road to WrestleMania as it often set the main event of the year, and this match was no different.
History in the making
The 1991 Royal Rumble was held two days after Operation Desert Storm began, and there were a few prerecorded pieces about wishing the US troops to come home and for peace in the Middle East.
Hogan winning gave the WWE a chance to have their biggest star stand center stage and call for peace, but it also built Hogan up for what would become one of his best feuds in the coming months against Sgt. Slaughter.
A subtle moment in the storyline came because the WWE had to reorganize things as Randy Savage was a no-show for the match as he fled the arena to avoid retaliation from the Ultimate Warrior.
Savage was supposed to be the Ultimate Warrior’s opponent, but he broke his wrist so Sgt. Slaughter faced the Warrior and defeated him thanks to Savage clocking Warrior with his scepter so Slaughter could get the pin.
To close out the night, Hogan eliminated the final three of Brian Knobbs, The Warlord, and Tugboat to add to his match high of 7 eliminations enroute to his second win.
What’s really fun about this day in wrestling history is no one cared he was the first to win two. Sure, it was mentioned, but we cared more about the product and the awesome match we just saw then the record.
As the years have gone by, it’s proven to be a pretty cool easter egg as the WWE continually touts records and who’s breaking what.
