It’s great when we get to see history making moments, and this day in wrestling history was one that was a long time coming for Drew McIntyre.
Drew’s first run ended in the WWE due to his own mistakes, and he learned from that and returned in a better frame of mind to begin his rise up the ladder.
Leading up to the Royal Rumble on January 26, 2020, there was no doubting his popularity after he turned face and became something more than hired muscle for Shane McMahon, and this was one of the coolest moments.
Of course, while many of us hoped for this outcome, we were sure Brock Lesnar was going to win since he was the best they had, but the twist mid match was awesome and the ending was even better.
You deserve it
Drew won his chance to challenge for either the Universal or WWE championship at WrestleMania, and the fans let him know their appreciation.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the following transcript.
“I dreamed of this when I was like four years old. It’s impossible to try and remember things that happened like I Claymored Brock Lesnar out of the ring after he took out like 15 dudes.
“Roman and I obviously had the big feud going last year and inevitably, he was the one I put out and 40,000 people cheered and not only that, they were chanting ‘You deserve it!’ and like that it almost made me bloody cry in front of the world and to hold myself together.
“Everything was rushing through my head the past eighteen years, all the ups, all the downs, and my family and my wife and all she’s endured and helped to make all this happen. It was just an overwhelming moment and it still is and I really am struggling to find the words.” – Drew McIntyre, BT Sport interview later that night.
What makes this extra special in so many ways is how he found out he was going to win when he got to the building that day, and to have it come to fruition was a phenomenal moment for him and the fans.
There’s so much that can go wrong in a normal match, much less when there are a large group in the same ring that it makes it even more special that he made it through without a freak accident or being accidentally eliminated.
This day in wrestling history began a great run for Drew that was overshadowed by the pandemic that hit a few months later.
Still, it shouldn’t take away what he accomplished and we hope he has his WrestleMania moment with a live audience. He deserves it.
