In 2022, Cody Rhodes has been the talk of the wrestling world. From him being announced as a free agent in January, to having a five star classic of a ladder match against Sammy Guevara – to now leaving AEW all together. The next move of Cody Rhodes now seems clear, as a return to WWE seems to be in the works.
A WWE Return Likely For Cody Rhodes
This information first comes from SportsIllustrated, where Justin Barrasso reported the following.
“Sources close to the situation have confirmed that his next destination will be back where his career started in WWE.” This was always an option following his AEW contract running out.
Rhodes might have taken some shots at WWE over his AEW career, namely smashing a throne that resembled that of Triple H – and scoffing at a Golden Shovel – but has otherwise been very professional.
Add in that Vince McMahon would love to sign one of the men who started the competition to WWE – and that Rhodes could be a main event player on his WWE return, having claimed two World Championship reigns during his time away. All of this alongside Rhodes starting his career in WWE, it comes together to make a fine WWE return.
Rhodes Lost His Booking Powers In AEW?
It’s now being rumoured that one of the major reasons for Rhodes leaving AEW is losing one of his key backstage roles. We’ve seen Tony Khan take full creative control recently in AEW, taking responsibilities away from Rhodes. While Rhodes was rarely in a main event role in AEW, he would always seemingly get big time storylines, even if they ended up being a major letdown, like his feuds with Shaq or Anthony Ogogo.
Rhodes was also trying to be like his father Dusty Rhodes, who was both a wrestler and celebrated booker. With that no longer a choice in AEW, it alone might have been enough to have Rhodes decide upon leaving the company he helped to create.
