The free agent market in professional wrestling right now is absolutely insane. From the likes of Windham Rotunda to Keith Lee, you could build a company from the ground up using free agents. However, few would expect one of the champions of AEW to be on this list – but now it’s been reported that Cody Rhodes, the current AEW TNT Champion – is working without a contract.
Cody Rhodes Is A Free Agent
This news was broken by Fightful, who said the following.
“Cody Rhodes is a free agent, working without an AEW contract, Fightful Select has learned. He’s the current AEW TNT Champion.”
It was a massive shock to fans all over the world. Right now, AEW’s early contracts are coming to an end, and it’s very possible that Rhodes contract was one of them. No one was expecting any of the EVP’s would let their contracts lapse, but that seems to now be the case. Right now, it’s expected that Rhodes will sign a new deal with AEW – but he could have another stop first.
A Possible Name For The Royal Rumble
Right now, we are on the path to the Royal Rumble in WWE. With Mickie James showing up as Impact Wrestling’s Knockouts Champion, it’s possible that Rhodes can show up with the TNT Championship around his waist. A major surprise has been rumored for weeks now, and Rhodes would fit the bill. Him working without a contract allows him to show up wherever books him. The bulk of Rhodes professional wrestling career was seen by fans in WWE, where he made his debut at the age of 16 in their developmental system, OVW.
From NXT to Wrestlemania, Rhodes was everywhere in WWE – and now has the chance to come back as a bigger star than ever before. Since leaving WWE, Rhodes has become a two time World Champion, winning the ROH & NWA World Heavyweight Championships. He is also the only three time AEW TNT Champion, and is set to defend soon against Sammy Guevara. It’s likely if he doesn’t sign a new deal soon, Guevara will regain the TNT Championship. However, Rhodes showing up in the Royal Rumble and bragging about it on AEW Dynamite would be a great way to build up his current heel character, a very mutually beneficial move for both AEW & WWE.
Right now, the situation is still unclear – but Rhodes is advertised for AEW Dynamite this Wednesday. What do you think is the next career move for Cody Rhodes? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
