One of the biggest stories of 2021 came when WWE released Jeff Hardy from his WWE contract. This came around the end of the year, and after Jeff Hardy left a match during a house show. Worry of a relapse was fresh in the mind of WWE, who jumped the gun and released Hardy before getting his drug test results back, which ended up being positive. Hardy has since turned down an offer to return to WWE, and might now be AEW bound.
Did Tony Khan Buy Out Jeff Hardy’s WWE Contract?
This Wednesday on AEW Dynamite, a big debut is expected. Tony Khan has taken to Twitter to set expectations of fans, with him saying that it’s both a free agent and someone coming through the Forbidden Door. While this was confusing to some fans, it simply means someone from another company is coming to AEW – and have no plans to return to their previous promotion.
Jeff Hardy was not in the conversation, with his non-compete clause being active until March. However, now things might be different, as teased by Matt Hardy on a recent Twitch Stream. While discussing to the coming debut and explaining what ‘Forbidden Door’ really means, Hardy would suggest that maybe his brother is arriving in AEW sooner than expected.
“As far as an update on Jeff and what’s going on, I don’t think he’s the guy that’s coming in this Wednesday against Isiah Kassidy. Although who knows? Tony Khan, Papa Khan’s got a lot of money. Maybe he bought out his contract. And maybe it is happening early. Who knows?”
Right now, we know that Jeff Hardy is not planning on returning to WWE after his recent release. Even promise of being inducted into the Hall of Fame was not enough to bring him back. AEW are expected to sign Jeff Hardy, with it being more of a ‘when not if’ situation.
