It looks like wedding bells will be ringing in the near future for Avril Lavigne. After one year of dating, she recently confirmed her engagement to fellow musician Mod Sun. The proposal took place in Paris where the “Sk8ter Boi” singer was presented with a sizable heart-shaped diamond ring.
Mod and Avril revealed that they got engaged on March 27, where they took a romantic boat ride on the Siene River that overlooked the Eiffel Tower. Mod clearly put a lot of thought into popping the question, as a violinist, champagne, and roses were on hand for the momentous occasion.
Avril Lavigne Gets Engaged to Mod Sun
Mod got down on one knee and asked for Avril’s hand in marriage as he showed her a stunning custom-designed sparkler by Beverly Hills Jeweler XIV Karats. The phrase “Hi Icon” is engraved on the inside of the ring as an homage to the first words Mod ever said to Avril. The inscription “Avril + Mod” can also be found on the dazzling piece of jewelry.
Mod, 35, took to his Instagram to share the news of their engagement, ‘The day we met I knew you were the one. Together forever til our days are done. I had a dream where I proposed in Paris. I pulled out a ring and asked you to wear it. I was on one knee as I looked in your eyes. You’re too beautiful for my words to describe. I grabbed your hand and took one last breath… I said “will you marry me?” and she said “yes.”‘
Avril, 37, also shed some light on the special meaning behind her new diamond, stating, “He knew from the very beginning I wanted a heart-shaped diamond because on the day we met, we had matching heart shaped paved rings on. We’ve worn them every day since, so it’s only fitting to have a heart-shaped engagement ring.”
Avril didn’t hold back when discussing her relationship with Mod, who’s real name is Derek Ryan Smith. “I knew we had a very strong unstoppable connection from the first week of writing and working together in the studio. Immediately, He made every day better. It was like I had known him forever. As time went on, things kept getting better, and it felt incredibly natural,” she gushed.
The pop-punk pair became an item in early 2021 following Mod’s collaboration on Avril’s album, Love Sux. The lovebirds made a red carpet appearance together at the Grammy Awards on April 4, but managed to keep their engagement under wraps until the time was right.
This will be Avril’s third marriage, as she was previously wed to Deryck Whibley of the band Sum 41 from 2006 to 2010 and Chad Kroeger of the band Nickelback from 2012 to 2015.
As for Mod Sun, he was in a rather unique “throuple” relationship with actress Bella Thorne and social media star Tana Mongeau in 2018. Mod also claims that he was briefly married to Thorne unbeknownst to the public…but that has never been confirmed.
