There has been a new legal development years after the death of rapper Mac Miller in 2018 as one of the dealers has been sentenced to almost 11 years behind bars.
Drug Dealer Involved in the Death of Mac Miller Sentenced to Almost 11 Years in Prison
The pills that resulted in Miller’s death were laced with fentanyl, a drug that is used for pain relief and is “80-100 times stronger than morphine” according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Ryan Reavis pleaded guilty to a felony count of selling the drug to the “100 Grandkids” artist.
Reavis asked for a five-year sentence on the bias that he was a dealer and not the manufacturer. The 39-year-old claimed to have no knowledge of the oxy pills being laced, according to a Rolling Stone report. Reavis was apprehended on Monday, September 25, 2019.
Prior to Reavis’ arrest, a cohort—Cameron Pettit—was arrested on Wednesday, September 4. Pettit was identified as the man who sold Mac Miller the drugs found in the rapper’s system. Investigators laid out the chain of distribution stating that a third man—Stephen Walter—gave Reavis the drugs who would give them to Pettit.
The drugs were sold to Mac Miller on Wednesday, September 5, 2018—two days before the young artist’s death.
The prosecution sought 12 years and six months. As it happens, the scales of justice tilted in the prosecution’s favor, and Reavis was given 10 years and 11 months on Monday, April 18. Before sentencing, Mac Miller’s mother, Karen Meyers, gave her victim impact statement:
“My life went dark the moment Malcolm left his world. Malcolm was my person, more than a son. We had a bond and kinship that was deep and special and irreplaceable. We spoke nearly every day about everything—his life, plans, music, dreams.”
At the moment, Ryan Reavis is the only man sentenced in connection to Mac Miller’s death. Stephen Walter pleaded guilty to the same charge as Reavis but is yet to be sentenced. Cameron Pettit’s trial is ongoing.
