Dr. Oz is currently running for the U.S Senate on the GOP ticket and had some loose ends to tie up before he could focus on the campaign trail. Now, long-time staffers and crew members of The Dr. Oz Show are calling him out as the then sudden announcement left many scrambling for work.
Former Staffers of “The Dr. Oz Show” Call the Pennsylvania GOP U.S Senate Candidate Out for Ending Show’s Run Abruptly
In November 2021, Dr. Oz announced that the show would be ending soon. The show ran its final episode on Friday, January 14 and it has been reported that many of the show’s staffers were basically taken by surprise.
There was no discussion that the show would be ending in a few months and those staffers had to hit the ground running. In speaking with Page Six, one staffer said:
“People who have worked for him for [13] years are now scrambling for work and are furious that he’s left them in a lurch financially after they worked their asses off for him for so long.”
Another staffer said that the decision was abrupt and that “No one had a clue”. Perhaps even more damning is that the first staffer claimed that in the lead-up to the announcement, the show host had them “working like dogs” on content to be used for his eventual campaign.
According to a third staffer who was interviewed:
“He was definitely asking for pictures and videos, but wasn’t saying what it was for. He was just asking for additional things and it turns out it was for his campaign.”
A source close to Dr. Oz said that the claims were not only dishonest but “completely dishonest.” The source also said that Oz promised to cover “all their health benefits and salaries throughout the end of contracts and he has been.” They also said that none of the content from the show is being used on the campaign site.
In December 2021, the long-running program was pulled in several major markets—mainly in Pennsylvania and New York. The show was also pulled in outside markets where some of the television stations’ signals reach.
The reason for the show being nixed is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule—the “equal time” rule—which allows candidates to request air time equal to their opponents. Dr. Oz had a one-hour weekday slot in the afternoon.
Staffers Are Put Out of Work Twice
Sony Pictures Television—which distributed the show—ran The Good Dish, a cooking-oriented spin-off starring Dr. Oz’s daughter Daphne Oz in the show’s place.
The spin-off was supposed to fill out the remainder of the 2021-2022 television season if the former heart surgeon and television host wins the nomination for the state GOP. However, that show was dunked in the bin just two months into its run.
This left the producers and staffers who were able to transition over to the spin-off looking for work once again. On that note, the third staffer said that it wasn’t going to work since “it came together so last-minute.”
The third staffer did mention that they believed Dr. Oz actually wants to help people by running for Senate but the way he went about it left those who were loyal workers for over a decade in dire straits.
The Dr. Oz Show had inked a new deal which would’ve seen it run into the 2022-2023 season.
