Sharon Osbourne has never been one to hold back and now she is sharing her opinion on why Whoopi Goldberg saying that the Holocaust “wasn’t about race” didn’t lead to her being fired from The View.
When The Times inquired about why Whoopi was able to keep her job, Sharon replied, “I’ll tell you why, because it’s the Jews, and nobody gives a f**k.”
Sharon Osbourne Explains Why Whoopi Goldberg Wasn’t Fired From The View After Controversial Holocaust Comments
Sharon, who has Jewish ancestry on her father’s side, made it very clear that Whoopi was not held to the same standard as others who have been ‘canceled’ for voicing their opinions, despite her remarks being disrespectful and hurtful to a specific community.
Sharon was infamously let go from The Talk in March 2021 after simply siding with her friend Piers Morgan, who received backlash for being a very outspoken opponent of Meghan Markle. Whoopi’s insensitive comments about the Holocaust may have been controversial but her punishment was only a brief suspension. Many other people and public figures, including Sharon Osbourne, have paid a much higher price for sparking far less outrage than Whoopi did with her remarks.
Sharon also noted that while she likes Whoopi personally, she wanted to call attention to the flagrant hypocrisy within the entertainment industry.
Sharon’s career woes started when Piers Morgan stormed off the set of Good Morning Britain on March 9, 2021 after disputing claims that Meghan Markle made in her interview with Oprah Winfrey. Piers stated that he “didn’t believe a word” that Meghan said regarding her mental health, which led to a heated debate with colleague, Alex Beresford. Piers unapologetically quit the show and later tweeted, “freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on”.
Sharon and the other panelists on The Talk discussed the polarizing moment on air the following day. Sharon stated that while she disagreed with Piers’ views, she supports his right to express his opinion. Co-host Sheryl Underwood insisted that his comments were rooted in racism and accused Sharon of ‘validating’ his ‘racist’ perspective.
Sharon was placed on permanent suspension and ultimately quit. She later voiced that she felt blindsided by both Sheryl, whom she considered a friend, and the network which seemingly forced her out of her contract.
Sharon later took to Twitter to double-down in support of Piers, tweeting at him, “I am with you. I stand by you. People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.”
“When stuff like this happens, true friends run towards you, fake friends run away. I love Sharon Osbourne because she always stays true to herself. She knew she would get abused by the woke brigade for tweeting this – but did it anyway because it [is] what she believes,” Piers tweeted in response.
Whoopi made her distasteful comments on The View earlier this year, where she referred to Jews and Nazis as “two groups of white people” and said that the Holocaust was about “inhumanity and not race”. Whoopi was able to apologize for her declaration and went back to work following a two week suspension.
