The parents of a 12-year-old boy are suing Apple on the basis that their son suffered permanent hearing loss while wearing AirPods during an Amber Alert. This is a new one, folks but it was bound to happen because those alerts are toxic-loud. Let’s get into the details.
Apple Is Being Sued for AirPods Causing 12-Year-Old’s Hearing Loss Following Amber Alert
The lawsuit against the Cupertino-based company was filed on May 16, 2022. Apple is being accused of negligence as well as fraud. Parents Carlos Gordoa and Ariani Reyes say that their son was watching Netflix on his phone when the Amber Alert came through.
If you’ve never heard an Amber Alert or your state/province’s emergency equivalent, they are often an unpleasant noise meant to draw your attention from whatever to the warning itself.
For example, the ALEA sound that went out during the Casey White and Vicky White manhunt is a scratchy-sounding siren that will leave your ears ringing if you have buds in and the volume up.
As for Carlos and Ariani’s son, it’s unknown if he had the volume turned to the max but the volume of the AirPods allegedly ruptured their son’s eardrum two years ago in May 2020. It is said that he experienced tinnitus, which is ringing in the ears.
They claim that the boy suffers from dizziness and has to wear a hearing aid. To back their claim, they say that the AirPods are defective because they will play alerts loudly regardless of the volume level. They are backing this claim with online consumer complaints from 2019 until the present that says the same thing about the AirPods’ alerts volume.
