As soon as the world relaxes and feels like it will resume its regular life, nature kicks back. A new virus is on the rise.
This virus is not something new to mankind. The first-ever case is dating from the 1950s. The registration of the infection happens during research on a case that appears on a monkey. Hence – its name.
Throughout the years, cases are emerging every now and then. However, at all times, mankind puts control over the situation fast. Now, we are facing a new spread of the virus, right after we get out of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Can Pets Transmit Monkeypox? – Why Patients Should Avoid Pet Contact?
The experts are advising the people that are diagnosed with monkeypox to avoid contact with their pets for a period of about three weeks. This is due to the concern of possible transmission of the virus to other people through them.
Monkeypox is a viral infection, it is common among rodents and monkeys. But what’s concerning is that humans are prone to the infection as well. When the infection emerges for the first time in the past century most cases appear in the southern hemisphere of the earth. However, in the recent period, the European countries include themselves in the list of countries with active cases.
In order to prevent a new pandemic on the scale of Covid, experts are urging patients to isolate themselves. The newest measure is to avoid contact with pets as well. Especially if the pets are in the group of rodents, or monkeys. The first is massively more common than the latter. If you own a Guinea pig, a hamster, mice, a common rat , or any rodent you should take extra care.
A virologist at the University of Warwick says that the worry is the virus could get into domestic animals. Moreover, it can essentially ping-pong between them and humans.
The official guidance statement from many viral infection prevention groups is that ‘for pet rodents in households where there are infected people, temporary removal from the household and testing to exclude infection is recommended. Particularly where there are human carrying the infection who have close contact with the animal.”
Rodents and monkeys are not so common pets throughout the world. The main concern of the regular households is whether dogs, cats, and birds can get the infection and transmit the virus.
The answer is yes. Common domestic animals can get the infection. However, the chances of getting the infection are really low. According to the Guardian, the high risk for infection is only for rodents.
Important to mention here is that – until now, there is no record of a pet getting the infection naturally.
In a statement for Axios, Jennifer Nuzzo, the director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University calms the public. She states the differences between monkeypox and covid.
“People are seeing these cases every day pop up on multiple continents. This feels very much like the early days of COVID. But, what made COVID so incredibly challenging is the fact that people could be infected and have no knowledge of it and then go on to spread it to others. There’s much less of a chance it will happen with this virus.”
To conclude, even though domestic animals could have the infection, their risk of obtaining it is really low. There is almost no significant place for concern about this happening. However, the WHO urges everyone to respect the measures. Pets should be isolated from anyone with symptoms of the virus.
