Last week, it broke that Fyre Festival co-founder and convicted fraudster Billy McFarland had been released from prison early and would be on supervised release and the conditions are interesting. After all, one doesn’t simply get out of jail with time remaining and go about their life, folks. Oh no, the time left in one’s original sentence must be put to use on the outside. In McFarland’s case that includes paying people back.
Fyre Festival Co-Founder Billy McFarland Has Some Work to Do As Part of His Supervised Release Conditions
McFarland’s lawyer, Jason Russo, says that the former Fyre Media CEO would be staying at a halfway house for the time being and would be on the state’s time and terms for the next three years. It sounds like he’s still behind bars when I put it like that but he’s definitely out of prison.
One of the conditions involves a mental health program and taking the prescribed meds. He is also responsible for covering outstanding costs for these services. Of course, he will also be subject to searches if officers believe he has something on him or something fishy is going on.
Mind you, Billy McFarland was sentenced to six years for fraud and not trafficking but this seems to be one of those conditions that simply goes along with the supervised release. Also, you have to make sure he’s not breaking the law in any way which would violate the goodwill of an early release.
McFarland will have to meet these conditions for three years while also working towards paying back $26 million to those he swindled with the Fyre Festival. It probably goes without saying that he won’t be handling money as an investor or festival organizer in the future.
