Before 7:30 PM on Friday, April 29, 2022, an emergency alert involving escaped convict Casey Cole White and his hostage, assistant director of corrections Vicky White hit many Alabama natives’ phones. Now, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton says that evidence points to the escape and kidnapping being an inside job—with Vicky White as the accomplice.
Who Is Casey Cole White?
In 2015, Casey Cole White committed several violent crimes throughout northern Alabama and southern Tennessee. These crimes included carjackings, shooting a woman, home invasion, and shooting a dog. He was captured on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, after a standoff with police.
This crime spree resulted in a 75-year sentence in 2019. A year later, he would write to investigators working on a 2015 cold case: the death of Connie Jane Ridgeway.
White confessed to murdering the 59-year-old in late October 2015 in Rogersville, Alabama. In the letter, he claimed that it was a murder-for-hire scheme. As a result, White was charged with capital murder during a burglary as well as murder for pecuniary gain.
The Manhunt for Escaped Inmate Casey Cole White Continues as Evidence Points to Missing Correctional Officer’s Participation
Vicky White informed employees that a prisoner would be transported to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation on the morning of April 29. The assistant director also said that she would be going in for medical treatment as she wasn’t feeling well, according to AL.com.
However, there was no transport scheduled nor was there a medical appointment. With two holes in the story, Sheriff Singleton came to the likely conclusion: Vicky White participated in the escape.
White’s patrol vehicle was spotted by a Florence, AL police officer before 10 AM that morning. Law enforcement wouldn’t raise the alarm until 3:30 PM when the assistant director couldn’t be contacted. The AD’s vehicle was later spotted at a shopping center’s parking lot. An investigation turned up nothing to assist in the case.
