There are times when you want something done, you have to do it yourself. Murder is one of those things where you shouldn’t want it done at all and doing it yourself is simply asking for complications. That’s what a New Jersey woman found out when she got 75 years for killing her girlfriend—after her hitman failed the job.
New Jersey Woman Gets 95 Years for Having to Finish the Murder of Her Girlfriend After a Hitman Failed
Tyrita Julius (41) avoided a prior attempt on her life on Thanksgiving Day 2015. In that attempt, Julius was in the car with her daughter. A man walked up to the car, spoke with her daughter, and fired shots into the car.
She managed to speed off before crashing into a pole. Both Tyrita Julius and her daughter survived the attack but Julius had been shot eight times. Police searched for their attacker but there was another development in the story.
A couple of months later in March 2016, Julius is reported missing by her mother. Now the police have attempted murder and the disappearance of a victim on their plate. It wouldn’t be until August 16, 2016, that the body of Tyrita Julius was discovered.
The Plot Revealed
Once recovered from the grave, investigators found that she had been wrapped in trash bags with an electrical cord around her neck. In investigating the property’s owner, Andre Harris, he came clean about helping Julius’ girlfriend—Jennifer Sweeney—to kill and get rid of Julius.
It also turns out that he was the one who failed to kill her the first time. Harris claimed that he did so to protect his son from Sweeney. In exchange, he was given 16 years behind bars. According to Harris, Sweeney became jealous of Julius and believed that she was cheating.
Sweeney stood trial in September 2021 and her defense attorney painted the story as the two being simply close friends. Not only that but Sweeney had too much going on for herself working for Comcast and spent a lot of time with Julius while she recovered from the failed hit.
Now, this isn’t a revolutionary tactic to throw investigators off and the prosecution pointed this out. Jennifer Sweeney was found guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, desecration of human remains, tampering with evidence, and weapons violations.
Her sentence came down on May 6 with her being given 75 years for the charges in relation to Julius’ murder. Sweeney was hit with another 25 years for her role in the failed hit in 2015.
She will be eligible for parole once she serves 85-percent of her sentence—which would be at the turn of the century in either 2101 or 2102.
