The 21-year-old was missing from work and a co-worker called the police to check on him. The co-worker was concerned as Yang had confessed to killing his wife over the phone—which was his excuse for not being at work. Allegedly, Xichen Yang said that he had stabbed his wife Nyu Quynh Pham to death and was trying to clean up the evidence.
Police would arrive at Yang’s home before 9 AM and gain entry to the apartment. Yang had already left the scene. “Immediately after officers entered the apartment, a female was found lying in a pool of blood in a bathtub,” authorities said of the scene. Pham was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:13 AM.
From Yang’s confession, he had cut Pham who began crawling toward the door. Afterward, Yang took her took the bathroom, laid her in the tub, and “played her favorite music”. He would hold her hand as she died for what he says was about 10 minutes.

Yang would tell the police that he could feel himself becoming angrier before the attack but felt that he could’ve de-escalated. As to why he didn’t he gave an awkward answer: it simply wasn’t how he was raised. He told authorities that he was an “all the way” kind of person.
Xichen Yang admitted to trying to clean up the blood and that he’d killed Pham because she burned his passport. This isn’t the first time police responded to an incident involving the couple. In January 2022, there was a situation of domestic violence resulting in Yang being arrested.
Yang and Pham had been married for six months prior to the murder but lived in separate residences. Xichen Yang is currently being held without bond and will appear in court on August 2, 2022.
