According to WFMY-TV in Greensboro, during her 911 call, Heather Auman told dispatch:
“My husband has shot himself…Hurry, he needs help…We were just fussing. He told me he couldn’t do it anymore and he pulled out his gun…He’s got a pulse, but he’s not responding whatsoever.”
Mishael Auman would be rushed to a hospital where he later died of his wounds. An investigation would determine that Heather killed Mishael and on June 29, she was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
During Heather’s 911 call, their 11-year-old son ran outside where a neighbor, Sabrena Therron spotted him. “I came outside and I saw his son just screaming. I asked him what was wrong and he told me that his dad shot himself,” she said.
A motive for the shooting hasn’t been established and she was being held at the Randolph County Detention Center for a July 1 court appearance. Judge Scott Etheridge said that the maximum sentence for Auman is death and that she qualifies for a death penalty lawyer.
Mishael Auman was buried the same day. Colleague and Randolph County Fire Marshal Erik Beard said of the late firefighter:
“MJ’s infectious smile, outgoing personality, and willingness to serve others will forever be missed throughout our county’s fire service. Our thoughts and prayers are with MJ’s family and friends during this time of loss.”
