Priscilla Presley has defended her ex-husband Elvis Presley by rejecting claims that he was a racist.
Priscilla Presley Denies Claims That Her Ex-Husband Elvis Presley Was A Racist-‘He Loved, Loved Being Around Blacks’
Her comments arrived following the release of the new ‘Elvis’ film which stars Austin Butler, as the critically-acclaimed musician.
During the course of that process, Elvis is shown to be a man that was deeply influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and then affected following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King.
While these things were nothing new for Priscilla, she could not understand the narrative that Elvis was an intolerant man.
In an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, she said: “He had never been a racist. He had friends, black friends, friends from all over. He loved their music, he loved their style. He loved being around Black musicians.”
This begs the question: where did the rumours originate from? Well, this rumour had originated in the 1950s which suggested that Elvis did not view people of colour in high regard in the music industry.
And yet, Priscilla debunked those claims by referencing the singer’s good relationship with musicians, Fats Domino and Sammy Davis Jr. Therefore, Elvis’ music was influenced by various cultural influences that he was exposed to.
Her following comments confirmed as much: “He loved, loved being around Blacks and loved being around anyone, actually. He was not prejudiced in any way. He was not racist in any way.”
The response on social media was much the same. A certain subset of people felt that outside of any credible evidence, there was much more support to suggest that Elvis did not have any racist inclinations.
One person wrote: “You won’t find any factual evidence from credible sources to say that he was racist…You will find plenty of evidence to support that he wasn’t. Hear from the black people who actually knew him.”
With Elvis no longer here to defend himself, we are no closer to knowing the truth. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
