Last week, in the Valencia region of Spain, the annual bous al carrer was held—better known as the Running of the Bulls—between July 7 and 14. In it, bulls are just released to run through towns. Usually, a couple of brave people or those just apparently tired of living will run ahead of the stampeding bulls.
It’s a welcome addition to the 2022 calendar for tourists and locals as in some locations like Pamplona, it was the first time it had been held since 2019 because of COVID-19 restrictions. As you might expect, there’s been deaths and injuries in the process.
The 2022 Running of the Bulls Has Resulted in Several Deaths and Injuries in the Return of the Regional Festivity
It was reported that three men died in the event which take place over several days and is capped off with the bulls fighting a matador. Picassent, south of Valencia, saw a 56-year-old man tossed in the air by one bull. He had been hiding behind some sort of block in the street when the bull knocked him into the air. The man suffered brain trauma and died a little over a week after the event ended.
North in Valencia in Meliana, a 50-year-old man died while receiving treatment after a bull gored him in the lung. In Pedreguer, a 64-year-old French tourist also died at the horns and hooves of the bulls. People being gored at the Running of the Bulls isn’t surprising or rare—it’s actually expected.
After all, bulls—like bears, rhinos, bison, moose, and hippos—all move faster than you’d think. Plus, they’re armed with horns and a lot of mass. Looking at the deaths, you could come to the conclusion that that bous al carrer is more of a young man’s game when in reality no one should be trying to outrun a group of large land animals.
The most famous part of Running of the Bulls takes place during the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona. Again, it’s the first time this bous al carrer was held since 2019, and would see around 35 injuries just in 2022.
