It’s been a few weeks since we last saw Eddie Kingston on AEW television, and while it was believed he was rotated out as is the company’s policy to keep things fresh or because of injury, it turns out he was quietly suspended after he confronted Sammy Guevara backstage
Dave Meltzer and PWInsider reported that Kingston was suspended a few weeks ago at AEW TV tapings at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN.
AEW Quietly Suspended Eddie Kingston Following Backstage Confrontation with Sammy Guevara
Rumors have been swirling since the news came out that Kingston took a swing at Sammy backstage after Sammy’s promo insulted Kingston for being a “fat piece of sh— just like all of ya’ll.”
Kingston has been outspoken toward critics of his appearance and body shamers in general.
Since it’s been reported AEW gives talent talking points and allows them to fill in the rest themselves, Sammy’s comment was probably solely his and meant to draw heat like any good heel.
Out of sight
The promo followed the AAA Tag Team Championship match between Guevara and Tay Melo and Dante Martin and Skye Blue at the Quake By The Lake Rampage tapings on August 11.
Kingston’s response from backstage was shown on the screen and he said he’ll take a vacation until their match, and also that he wouldn’t insult Sammy but would speak to him like a man.
He did call Sammy a disgusting pig and announced it’s pig hunting season.
Since then, Kingston reportedly told Meltzer he sometimes does things he shouldn’t and owned up to his actions.
He gave a statement to PWInsider: “You know the truth. I wouldn’t lie. I was wrong for being unprofessional. That is the blind fact. He did what he did and the public can judge that but I know for a fact I was wrong.”
It’s not known if Sammy was also suspended as he wasn’t at last week’s TV tapings, but there were reports of lots of traveling issues and Sammy and Melo were at AEW Rampage’s taping where they faced Ortiz and Soho.
There are reports indicating Kingston will return for next week’s AEW Dynamite (August 31) and his and Sammy’s match at AEW All Out is still scheduled but not confirmed.
While Sammy’s intent was arguably to get heat with the fans, it’s hard to assume he thought Kingston would be okay with what he said, but it’s also fair to expect Kingston to take it in stride.
Of course, we can’t know Sammy’s intent, but sometimes things just hit us harder than we expect or they should, and we’re glad Kingston’s accepted responsibility and he’s moving on. He’s definitely shown himself to be a stand up person.
