Alaska Man Gets 99 Years for the Murder of 16-Year-Old David Grunwald in 2016
The murder occurred on November 13, 2016. After the pistol-whipping, Grunwald was driven away from the camper in Grunwald’s car and into the woods where he was later killed. Detectives discovered David Grunwald’s remains roughly three weeks later.
The thing about this murder is that the motive behind it is pretty much nonexistent. As Palmer Superior Court Judge Gregory Heath put it, “Almandinger’s crimes were truly horrific and committed for no apparent reason.”
Erick Almandinger was given 79 years for the first-degree murder of David Grunwald, 10 years for kidnapping, and five years apiece for first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence. On top of that, he was hit with a $2,500 fine apiece for arson and first-degree vehicle theft. His sentencing comes years after his guilty verdict in spring 2018.
Speaking of the three others mentioned above, co-conspirators Austin Barrett received 45 years for second-degree murder while Dominic Johnson was slapped with 99 years for murder in the first degree. Bradley Renfro is still waiting to be sentenced.
