Right now, AEW owner Tony Khan is working hard to create an alternative to WWE in the United States. He’s done a fine job building up a strong roster, with indy veterans, rising stars, and ex-WWE stars making up the AEW roster. However, his hiring strategies are not without criticism. Fans have claimed that the AEW roster is too bloated with people who couldn’t make it in WWE, or are indy veterans that no one cares about. Now, Khan might be calling out those critics with the latest AEW faction – the Trustbusters.
The Trustbusters Mirror The Critics Of Tony Khan – Spending Too Much Money On Washed Up Indy Wrestlers & WWE Rejects
Recently making their debut on AEW Dark, The Trustbusters is a faction that currently contains leader Ari Daivari, indy veteran Slim J, and former WWE NXT star Parker Boudreaux. Following a recent episode of AEW Rampage, Sonny Kiss might have also joined their ranks – but this remains unclear at the time of writing.
Fans quickly noticed that this faction could have been a bit of a wink at the critics of Khan’s hiring practices however. Ari Daivari has been called the avatar of Tony Khan, with the rich boy gimmick – allowing him to hire wrestlers without a care, building this faction and trying to sway the likes of Orange Cassidy to join.
Slim J is the definition of an indy veteran that seemingly has no place on TV in 2022, despite being an innovator and still very smooth in the ring. He’s not as well known as the likes of Matt Sydal, Christopher Daniels, or Silas Young – but has run in a lot of the same circles as them.
Parker Boudreaux meanwhile was officially signed to AEW this past Friday, but is still viewed as many as a failed project from WWE – with him being released from NXT earlier this year after a run under the name of “Harland”. He’s someone expected to break out as a star in the coming years, and is a developmental project for AEW now. Despite his potential, he’s simply viewed as an ex-WWE guy, and that makes the theory of Trustbusters being a win at Khan’s critics all the more prevalent.
A Solid Midcard Faction For AEW
Right now, The Trustbusters are firmly booked as a midcard heel faction in AEW. They will be involved in the Trios Championship tournament, already putting them above The Factory or The Wingmen, but they’re well below groups like Undisputed Elite and La Faccion Ingobernable. Their first tournament match comes against Best Friends on the next episode of AEW Rampage, and while a victory is possible – it’s slim.
Regardless of the intentions of Tony Khan with this faction, it’s clear there’s some talent involved. If Sonny Kiss joins up, that could get them some more hype from fans – as Kiss has been hardly used on TV – with his match against Parker being the first in nearly two years.
