An Alabama man was arrested in connection to the death of Nathan Gemeinhart. The 42-year-old Gemeinhart was originally reported missing on August 8, 2022 in Birmingham.
Missing Alabama Man ID’d as Body Found Inside Burning Abandoned House – Suspect Being Held in Oklahoma
On August 9, 2022, the Birmingham PD and Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire on Eufaula Avenue. The house was abandoned and the Birmingham PD began investigating it as arson and “an unclassified death.” It was made clear that foul play wasn’t being ruled out.
Here in Birmingham, abandoned house catching fires isn’t a regular thing but it’s not uncommon—during the winter. As the temperature drops and the city’s homeless find abandoned building to sleep in, it’s not surprising to hear about the houses catching fire and a body being found inside.
During the summer, it’s a bit different and that instantly made this look suspicious. On August 24, 2022 those suspicions were confirmed when the remains were identified as Nathan Gemeinhart. A warrant was issued for Youit De Witt Jones for capital murder (kidnapping) and arson.
As it would turn out, Jones had left Alabama weeks ago and was in Ardmore, Oklahoma. On August 10, he had been arrested after attempting to carjack a woman in a McDonald’s parking lot. He is awaiting transfer back to Alabama.
The GoFundMe by the family of Nathan Gemeinhart included an update following the ID of his body:
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our Nathan. He was good, kind, and faithful. He was funny. He listened well. He worked hard. He never met a stranger and never, ever turned down a plate of tex-mex. Nathan was a gifted musician who enjoyed teaching his children the names of instruments and blues musicians. He loved Jesus.
He absolutely adored being a daddy. He delighted in his family and friends. His love for his wife was patient, tender, and unending. We miss him terribly, and will grieve his absence the rest of our days.
The manner of his death is gut wrenching, and so we look with an achy hope to the Christian Scriptures for comfort. We believe we will see Nathan again, where God will wipe away our every tear, and where death is no more.
The family asks for privacy during this time. Thank you for your cooperation, we are all deeply grateful for your support.”
