Since the last part of the Pirates Of The Caribbean, we haven’t seen Depp in a pirate costume. It is true that Jack Sparrow is one of the roles that rose Depp to fame. But, due to reasons connected to his defamation trial, he pledged not to return to the pirate story again.
However, he put on a pirate outfit once more recently. It is not what you think. He is a man of his word. He is not back as Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp Is A Pirate Again – But Not Jack Sparrow
Johnny Depp now appears in a video game commercial, all dressed up as a pirate. The commercial is about a video game called Sea of Dawn, a freeware game available on the internet.
This is not a new game per se. It first came up in 2007, however, until now it is gradually building a larger and larger community of players. At the moment it counts more than 300 million players worldwide.
In the video, Depp plays an Irish pirate named Phillip Artoosh. It is obvious that Artoosh is an older character than Jack Sparrow. He has white eyes, limps on one side, and uses a cane to walk. The scene begins as he sits comfortably in his home, and a sudden visitor comes through the door. It is a bill collector. The two engage in a conversation and the ‘pirate’ Depp tells a few jokes to the bill collector in his recognizable voice.
“If there’s an opportunity for humor, I’m going to take it. I want to see a character who has the chutzpah to do things I would never do.” – Depp says behind the scenes.
Depp is a remarkable actor. He puts his soul into the characters he plays. Jack Sparrow was one of those characters. However, he pledged not to return to his role ever again since Disney decided to put him away immediately after the emergence of the defamatory article in the Washington Post.
Since then, a full trial has passed. Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation and won the trial. The estimated loss of the actor due to the defamatory article sits somewhere around $50 million, however, the judge and jury decided that $10 million would be enough to compensate him for the loss.
Nonetheless, one more thing that came out of this trial aside from the money involved. The actor pledged not to return to any Disney movie in the future.
At one point in the trial, Depp states that nothing can make him return to the franchise.
“The fact is, Mr. Depp if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?” – Amber Heard’s lawyer asked the Pirates of the Caribbean star.
“That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.” – Depp stated.
