Sean Avery and his wife, Hilary Rhoda, have called it quits. The Sports Illustrated model recently filed for divorce from the retired NHL player, having cited ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason for their split. According to court docs, the couple’s official date of separation is listed as July 17.
Avery and Rhoda have been married since 2015 and share a two-year-old son, Nash Hollis. A prenuptial agreement was signed prior to their union and Rhoda has requested for shared custody of their child.
Sean Avery’s Wife, Model Hilary Rhoda, Files For Divorce From Former New York Rangers Star
Avery showed no indication of an impending breakup between him and Rhoda earlier this year. In April, he dedicated a birthday post to his wife, saying, “Happy Birthday to the most beautiful woman in the world who continues to evolve as a creative and, more importantly, an incredible mother”. But Hilary Rhoda did take a solo trip to Hawaaii with their son in recent months, with Sean Avery nowhere in sight.
Sean and Hilary’s relationship had been marred with rumors of toxicity from the start. A New York Daily News article from 2016 accused the former Rangers left wing of ‘brainwashing’ Rhoda while simultaneously ‘freeloading’ off of her. An insider also alleged that Avery took it upon himself to renovate her Southampton property to his liking, and then stuck her with the $100,000 bill.
Avery, who had an impressive career as a professional hockey player for thirteen seasons, largely with the New York Rangers, has always had a reputation for being a loose cannon. Avery’s unpredictable antics both on and off the ice often made headlines. The discord between Avery and his mother–in-law, Marianne Rhoda, has been well documented after she filed for a restraining order against him in 2016.
Suffolk County Family Court docs revealed that Avery “committed the family offense of harassment in the second degree” and he per the restraining order, he had to “surrender any and all handguns, pistols . . . shotguns and any other firearms” to the authorities”.
Rhoda’s lawyer also revealed, “During a course of time in the summer of 2016, [Avery and Rhoda] were living in the same area in the Hamptons and he was harassing her. They were running into each other, belonged to the same gym, and he’d issue profanities at her and make obscene gestures. He was driving in his car too close to her and scaring her.”
Sean Avery was also arrested in 2015 for allegedly throwing rocks at cars, took an epic temper tantrum on the set of an off-Broadway show in 2014, and went on a Twitter tirade against an advocate for the homeless in 2016. On top of that, he was also found guilty of ‘criminal mischief’ last month for bashing a car with a scooter that was blocking a bike lane in NYC. Avery has also been booted from various jobs and television show gigs due to his combative nature and constant need to incite fights with everyone around him.
