A South Carolina woman was killed in an alligator attack at Hilton Head Island on August 15, 2022. The attack occurred in Sun City, commonly referred to as an age-restricted planned community—or retirement community.
South Carolina Woman’s Body Held Hostage by Alligator Following Attack
At around 11:15 AM, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office got a call about a large alligator near a lagoon in the community. When officials showed up, they found the gator and noticed that it appeared to be guarding a body.
By 1 PM, the body was identified as Nancy Becker (88). Eventually, the 9’8” alligator was removed from the immediate area and later euthanized. Major Angela Viens of the BCSO had this to say of the situation:
“When we responded, that’s what we observed, as well as that the alligator was basically holding her hostage, was guarding her and didn’t want anyone close by. There’s no indication that it was a dog-walking event. That is what we commonly see and hear about in the Lowcountry.”
The belief is that the late Ms. Becker was gardening and slipped, falling into the pond. This was the likely conclusion since she wasn’t out walking her dog–which is one of the more common causes of alligator attacks.
Dog owners might be aware that there are gators in the area and states like South Carolina and Florida tend to have signs around to warn pedestrians and dog owners about the dangers of walking too closely to any inland body of water and be alert.
