Retired Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib has stepped away from his NFL Thursday Night Football duties after his brother Yaqub Talib was charged with murder during a youth game.
Super Bowl Champion Aqib Talib Steps Away from ‘NFL Thursday Night Football’ Position Following Brother’s Murder Charge
The incident that resulted in the younger Talib dropping his Amazon duties occurred on August 13, 2022 at a youth football game in Lancaster, Texas. Aqib and Yaqub were helping with coaching a team but an unfavorable call resulted in Aqib rushing onto the field to address the referees. The confrontation went from verbal to physical.
“During the disagreement, the opposing coach staff were involved in a physical altercation and one of the individuals involved in the altercation discharged a firearm striking one adult male,” according to authorities.
In the video, one coach—Mike Hickmon—is shown approaching others with a down marker before it cuts out. During that time Hickmon was shot by Yaqub and later died of his injuries. Two days later, the older Talib would turn himself in after a warrant was put for his arrest. Aqib Talib wasn’t charged with any offenses. His lawyer had this to say on the situation:
“Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.
It’s unfair to pass judgment before a full investigation has taken place. I believe once all the witnesses are interviewed there will be a different perspective as to what happened this past Saturday.”
