There is an uproar in the Vamanjoor area of Mangalore, Karnataka, India as a family annihilator will be released on good conduct. Praveen Kumar (41) killed his aunt and cousins in 1994.
The Family of Indian Murderer Praveen Kumar Objects to His Potential Release On Good Behavior – Murdered Aunt and Cousins in 1994
Just after midnight on February 23, 1994, in Vamanjoor, Praveen Kumar slaughtered his father’s sister and her family using a hoe before running off with stolen jewelry.
Kumar was apprehended not long afterward and given the death penalty. For years, his pleas and appeals were shot down by the High Court, the Supreme Court, and the President. It appeared that he had been given the death penalty and would see his sentence out.
However, the word that he could be released on good behavior got out. Praveen Kumar opted to have that death penalty verdict flipped to life imprisonment after the assassins of PM Rajiv Gandhi had their executions dropped. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment but now this talk of a release has some citizens alarmed.
“If Praveen, who killed his own relatives for the greed of money is released from prison, he will be a big threat to society,” said a representative for the family of the deceased and of the murderer. “Praveen’s own family also is concerned about his release. Releasing a merciless killer like Praveen is an insult to the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence Day.”
The Superintendent of Police for the Dakshina Kannada, Hrishikesh Sonawane district is said to have received an order to check the climate before releasing Praveen. However, SP Sonawane says that he did not “have any knowledge of receipt of letter with regards to release of the convict. I will look into it.”
