We know them since the good old Top gear days. The most famous car critics’ trio of all time. Aside from knowing them from their fun episodes, and interesting conversations, we remember them from their insanely dangerous challenges.
Until now, they had luck and had just a few incidents while filming, however, that doesn’t mean that they are invincible. Unfortunately, James May learns that the hard way.
Grand Tour’s James May Hospitalized After Car Crash At 75mph
The Ground Tour’s presenter James May had sustained a serious concussion during an incident that happened while filming an episode for the show. Reportedly, May broke a rib and underwent a brain scan before claiming OK after the crash.
James May is 59 years old. His teammates Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond are 62 and 52. They are not as young as they were when they topped the lists for the most watched car show on the planet. However, seems like their minds are not much different than in the beginning. Even though they are considerably older now, they continue filming these dangerous stunts. They continue getting on these ridiculously dangerous challenges.
The trio was in the middle of the filming of their Prime Video hit when the unexpected and uncalled for happened and James May crashed his car.
They were in Norway, filming a drag race like video in a tunnel that ended with a rock wall. To make the surroundings even more dangerous they had agreed to put on the lights in the tunnel as the car passes below them. This significantly lowered the reaction time when needed.
This is the reason the Grand Tour’s James May was unable to brake on time and ended up hitting the rock wall at 75mph.
James, all bloodied up was helped out of the car by the medical team. He is rushed to the hospital where numerous tests were made on him, including brain scans and MRIs.
From the results, it is clear that he broke one rib only. And taking into consideration the speed at which he crashed, this is a very very lucky outcome.
After the results from the scans come in, James remains in the hospital for some time. His teammates continue the ‘tour’ without him.
A source present at the filming says – “It looked extremely worrying at first. Jeremy and Richard were concerned about their mate and the paramedics swooped in quickly. As ever, medical staff are waiting in the wings in case things go horribly wrong. James smashed his head quite hard in the impact and was bloodied by it. He was complaining about pain in his back and neck.”
“May broke at least one rib and was quite shaken by it. He had to abandon filming and Jeremy and Richard had to leave him in hospital and carry on with the trip. He was only able to join them once given the all-clear a day or so later.” – he added.
