One of the biggest news stories surrounding WWE before the retirement of Vince McMahon was proposed plans to move away from a PG rating on TV. Fans yearned for the return of TV-14, allowing for a more edgy product – and WWE was seemingly taking steps to return to that rating. However with Triple H in charge of the company, they’ve taken some steps back from this choice.
WWE Backs Away From Moving To TV-14, Both Smackdown & RAW Will Remain PG
The reports of WWE going back to a TV-14 rating would circulate through July, with the primary source being Andrew Zarian of The Mat Men podcast. He’d report about an email sent out among people at the USA Network about Monday Night RAW becoming a TV-14 show. This was followed up with a report stating this email was sent out prematurely.
While there was truth to this original report, plans have changed – and both Monday Night RAW & Smackdown Live are now expected to remain with a PG rating. This makes the shows more advertiser friendly, which is the key reason the ‘PG era’ has gone on for so long.
Triple H Taking Over Has Made Fans Forget That The Show Is PG Now
However, the reason why fans were wanting things to return to TV-14 was a simple one – they felt that would make the shows better to watch. The rise of AEW with more violence and blood was a wakeup call that those things can be used on TV without issue, with AEW only losing a few sponsors since their 2019 TV debut. But it didn’t take TV-14 to make WWE worth watching again, just good booking.
Since Triple H has taken over as head of creative in WWE, Monday Night RAW has been becoming must see TV once again – with the three hour runtime being less of a slog, and more a fun wrestling show. The match quality, storylines, and production have all jumped in quality – proving that PG WWE can be a fun watch.
