With the AEW World Championship now vacant, there’s the aptly named Tournament Of Champions to crown a new champion at Grand Slam. It kicks off tonight with Hangman Page vs. Bryan Danielson III. With their past two matches over the AEW World Championship being some of the greatest matches in AEW history, expectations are high for this massive clash tonight – with the winner moving on to face Chris Jericho in the second round.
Bryan Danielson Has Never Been Able To Defeat Hangman Page
Danielson would engage in a test of strength as this match began, before moving into technical wrestling. In their two matches, one was a 60 minute time limit draw – and the other was a powerful win by Page, because Page was able to control the pace. Danielson would force Page into the corner, and hit the cocky chop to the chest before flowing out of the ring.
Back in the ring, Danielson would look for the Romero Special, before stomping his knees into the mat instead. Page was cornered for some heavy chops and kicks, but was able to turn things around. Danielson would be sent to the apron, and hit with the springboard lariat to the floor.
Page looked for the vaulting body press to the floor, but was caught by Danielson and driven shoulder first into the steel of the ringpost. Danielson would follow up with the running dropkick into the barricade, before taking Page into the ring and stomping down hard on his elbow twice.
Page would catch Danielson with the Fallaway Slam, sending him from the ring and getting the chance to recover. He’d hit the flying body press, wiping Danielson out. Death Valley Driver would land in the ring, but Danielson would be able to avoid Deadeye.
Page would be cornered for the running dropkicks, with Danielson hitting two before Page looked for the powerbomb. Danielson would be able to avoid and hit a hurricanrana, before hitting the Buzzsaw Kick. The mid-kicks would follow, before Danielson would look to go to the top rope.
Advancing In The Tournament Of Champions
Page would catch Danielson and get him with the moonsault slam for the two count. Immediately to the apron for that Buckshot Lariat – Page was ready to end it, before Danielson would roll out to the floor. Page would make him take a seat, and rushed in to kick him in the face with that big boot.
Danielson would be able to hit the arm wringer to drive Page into the apron, again targeting the arm used for the Buckshot Lariat. The chops would be exchanged in the middle of the ring, before Page would hit the Golden Star powerbomb for a two count. Page would go up top for the moonsault, but was hung from the Tree of Woe – but would fight free for the Discus Lariat.
LaBell Lock would be applied as Danielson was able to kick out, but Page would fight free and hit some driving knee strikes. Danielson got back to his feet, and they’d trade rolling elbows before the running knee was blocked into the Deadeye for a two count. Moonsault would be avoided, and Danielson hit the running knee – only for Page to roll from the ring.
Tope Suicida would be caught and Page hit the powerbomb onto the apron. Moonsault press and Buckshot Lariat would follow, but Danielson would counter with an O’Connor Roll for the victory.
