Back at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door – fans were let down to hear that the planned match between Bryan Danielson & Zack Sabre Jr. would not be happening. Danielson was injured, but promised an excellent substitution. This would end up being the AEW debut of Claudio Castagnoli (fka Cesaro in WWE). Since then, Claudio has made a splash in AEW & ROH, joining the Blackpool Combat Club and winning the ROH World Championship, and shows no sign of slowing down. We now know his list of dream matches for his time in AEW as well, giving a potential road map ahead of the Swiss Superman.
Claudio Castagnoli Lists Some Dream Opponents
While sitting down with WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle for an episode of The Kurt Angle Show – Claudio would be asked about his dream matches now that he’s settled into the AEW roster. Claudio would have the following to say.
“Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta are definitely on my list. Yuta, obviously, less so because we’re both in the Blackpool Combat Club together, so maybe teaming up with him,” Claudio began. “Oh my God, the Lucha Brothers. they’re both amazing. I was in a Ladder Match with them. Then there’s Andrade and RUSH, who are both amazing stars. I haven’t wrestled The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega in a long time.
So, of course, I think that will be on a lot of people’s lists. I haven’t had a match with Chris Jericho that was like — I’ve faced him a lot on live events and maybe one or two TV matches but they were not very long, so that will be something else. There’s a bunch of younger kids that I would definitely like to get in the ring with,” he continued. “Dante Martin, for example.”
Making The ROH World Championship Matter Again
While the purchase of Ring Of Honor by AEW owner Tony Khan was a move that come questioned, it has truly brought the brand the mainstream attention that even The Elite were unable to do when they were in major positions. The reign of Claudio Castagnoli is restoring some credibility to the ROH World Championship, after a few years of sadly being an afterthought.
He’s already defended the belt against Dustin Rhodes, Ari Daivari & Dax Harwood – and if he defends against even a few of the names mentioned above, it will already be one of the best reigns since the prime of ROH. It seems like Chris Jericho could be his next big challenge – after Jericho expressed interest on commentary. That could be one of the biggest matches in ROH history – simply due to the amount of sheer star power Jericho carries.
