A South Carolina man was charged after stealing the ashes of his ex-girlfriend’s mother to buy heroin. This is an odd case since the thought process of ashes being used as currency or barter goods is…mind-boggling.
South Carolina Man Charged in the Theft of Ex-Girlfriend’s Mother’s Ashes to Buy Heroin
Jackson Rutland (19) was named by his ex-girlfriend as the culprit on October 11, 2022, after she returned home and found the door broken and the inside turned upside down. Obviously, someone was looking for something at the residence.
The ex contacted the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office to report a break-in and mentioned that Rutland had broken into the house before. During an investigation, authorities found a white powder-like substance on the floor and are leaning towards it being the mother’s ashes.
WLTX-TV obtained the incident report which states that Jackson Rutland actually used some of the ashes to buy heroin. You’d think that the urn itself had monetary value and could be pawned or something.
Instead, the notion that he managed to either exchange the ashes for heroin or was able to sell some of the ashes and buy his drugs raises many questions.
Authorities arrested Rutland on October 13, 2022 and charged him with second-degree burglary, receiving stolen goods, and desecration of human remains. Currently, he is jailed at the Aiken County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.
So, a question for the readers out there: the ashes…how? How do you believe Rutland was able to get heroin with the ashes? Who is in Aiken County, South Carolina accepting ashes as currency?
Share your thoughts below if you figured it out or if you’re as confused as I am.
