According to the police, the family was sleeping in their rental car across from the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Complex when the father noticed a suspicious, black car in the area.
That’s when the individual in the car opened fire on the family’s rental. The pregnant mother was struck in the head but sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Fortunately, the couple’s three children made it out of the shooting uninjured. A fast-moving investigation turned up a car belonging to Stamat and matching the car in surveillance footage on October 6.
In speaking to the Tampa PD, Stamat said that not only was he the only one driving the car on that date, he was also in the area of the shooting that morning.
Investigators executed a search warrant on the 21-year-old’s BMW and residence and turned up an empty 9mm handgun box in the car. Inside the residence, they found shell casings matching those at the scene.
Christopher Stamat Jr never divulged why he shot the family but did mention that he felt that someone was stalking him. The correlation between shooting a homeless family and being stalked remains a mystery.
He was charged with second-degree attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and shooting into a vehicle.
